This easement preserves nearly 14 wooded acres on Samish Island Road, at the island's entrance. The property can never be subdivided or developed. No trees may be harvested, protecting the scenic view, forest, and wildlife. The first 11 acres were protected by donation of an easement in August, 1995 and the original donor's son protected an additional 2.75 acres through an amendment in 2004.
This area formerly hosted a large Great Blue Heron nesting site, which may again be occupied. Nesting herons are very sensitive to disturbance during nesting/rearing season - March through October. The best hope of having the herons return is to ensure the forest remain undisturbed. Entire colonies of herons have been known to permanently abandon their nesting areas for seemingly slight distubances.
One of the photos below is an aerial of some trees in the heronry - can you spot the heron nests in it?
This is a private property without public access. If you are interested in visiting the property and learning more about herons please watch for volunteer opportunities in this area.
