GiveBIG to Great Blue Herons

Beloved Great Blue Herons serve an important role as an indicator species of the greater health of the entire Puget Sound ecosystem. Historically, colonies of Great Blue Herons were found nesting throughout the forested marine shoreline of the Salish Sea. Much of this habitat has been lost or fragmented. In the past 50 years, small colonies combined into large colonies. Skagit Land Trust owns or protects the three most significant nesting sites in Skagit County. We are the defacto "protector of the herons" in the region.

Today we are asking you to #GiveBIG to Great Blue Herons. You gift will -

• Upgrade our aging camera monitoring system at March Point.
The camera allows the public to observe real-time images of herons nesting. Thousands of children watch herons hatch and grow each season on the streaming feed provided online and at Padilla Bay Interpretive Center. Our camera has stopped functioning and needs to be replaced. Your donation today will allow up to install a sustainable system that will operate for years to come.

• Support Citizen Science Efforts
Each year staff and volunteers track the behaviors, colony health, and number of nests at our heronries. 757 nests, supporting up to 3,000 birds, were recorded at March Point alone in 2018. This heronry is critical to the long-term sustainability of herons in Puget Sound. Your gift will grow these efforts and engage more people with the care of these birds.

• Increase Public Education on Herons
The Trust hosts multiple talks and informational walks about the importance of Great Blue Herons to our local ecosystem. We are working with neighbors to share best practices in heron nesting buffer zones and foraging sites. Your support allows us to continue this work with the community.

An anonymous donor has challenged us to raise $10,000 for Great Blue Herons through the GiveBIG platform. If successful, they will match that amount dollar for dollar!

Your donation today will help care for lands critical to Great Blue Heron health. Your gift will promote the importance of this Washington State Fish & Wildlife Priority Species to locals and visitors of Skagit County.

Please join in Giving BIG for the Great Blues!
