Skagit Land Trust purchased Hurn Field in 1999 after a successful fundraising campaign where over a hundred community members pitched in to protect this beloved elk haven. Hurn Field, just west of Concrete, is one of the best places in Puget Sound to view elk in their natural setting. House Slough, which flows into the near-by Skagit River, also provides high quality fish habitat for juvenile Coho salmon and Cutthroat trout. Beaver, songbirds, and waterfowl are also at home in the luscious habitat.

For many years, people would pull off State Route 20 to view the elk which caused traffic problems and did not enable safe viewing. In 2006, Skagit Land Trust teamed up with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and constructed a gravel pullout at Hurn Field. With the help of many local businesses, individuals, and foundations, three interpretive signs have now been installed to provide information about this unique property and the elk that inhabit it.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11am on Saturday February 9th at Hurn Field to celebrate the installation of the educational pullout. The event will include several speakers to talk about the elk and their habitat and how we as a community can steward this treasured habitat. Of course, at any time, people can now pull off State Route 20 at Hurn Field and enjoy the elk and the signs.
